In episode 35, I chat with my dear friend Rebecca Magee (@thisiwear) about so many things-- sustainable fashion, creating healthy boundaries, Rebecca's experience with burnout, why we shouldn't feel so much pressure to have a single passion or to monetize the things that make us happy, and more.   • In my 20s it seemed, to me, like I had it all figured out. I was traveling the country teaching entrepreneurs business skills to start up organizations and projects that served a social and/or environmental mission. I worked with hundreds of entreprenurs, taught dozens of workshops, was always on the road and knew the skills I was building would help me start a business of my own, one day. I left that job and launched my ethical fashion company, @shopimby, and spent nearly three years chipping away at that. My thirties are different, though I don't know if it has anything to do with age. I closed my company because it wasn't working for me. I focused on my health. I no longer tie my self worth to the number of hours I work in a day (well, I try not to). I'm proud to no longer be hustling or working on the weekends. I must say, though, it is humbling to start again. To admit when things in your life aren't serving you. To get off the highway when you can clearly keep driving but the destination is no longer for you. My entire adult life I've equated my success to how hard I was working, to how impressive I would look to others. I can't say I have totally moved passed that, it's hard to completely dissociate myself from ego, but I'm slowly working to figure out what actually lights me up. To accept that, while I may have had a "successful" career in the past, right now I'm taking things slow. Working less. Actively trying to do less and be less busy. Not jumping at every opportunity to make money even when I feel like I need to. It's weird. And very uncomfortable. It's hard to not just try to do things to fill the time. It make me uncomfortable when I meet new people not to be able to share the "impressive" things I do. But it's right. Is in my best interest and the interest of those I'm looking to serve. I'm asking myself the hard questions and trying to patiently await what might appear before me. To follow my intuition. To take time for myself. To just be.
  • Lately everything and everyone is telling me I need to be in nature more. I'm too plugged in and inside. I want to connect to herbs and plants but my relationship to herbal medicine revolves around the supplement aisle in the health food store. It dawned on me recently that everything I'm trying to connect to is through a intermediary, and how disconnected that makes me feel. I want to study something and I stare at my computer. I want to connect to food as medicine and I do so at the health food store. My compost is in a bin that is carted off to who knows where. This surface level connection is not serving me any longer. I want to touch the plants, to get to know the herbs, our food, our soil from the source, from getting my hands dirty, from living it. Not reading about it or starting at a tiny screen. My medicine reading with @mamamedicine really opened my eyes to this. She told me I was like a tree with no branches. I love the earth but I'm disconnected from it. I need to be in nature to learn from nature in order to teach sustainability and wellness. I need to get my fingers into the soil. No more regurgitating information I learn, lately from this little app. I want to teach and share from my experience. I share in depth about this change, my move to Colorado, and what I've learned about myself and through my podcast guests over the past year in last week's solo episode on the podcast if you'd like to hear about I feel about all this.   • Where do I begin with this week's episode of #mediumwellpodcast? I feel so honored to have the opportunity to chat with Deborah Hanecamp, aka @mamamedicine, at the beautiful @spacebymamamedicine. We discussed how to balance financial responsibility with trying different healing moralities, conscious confrontation, what Deborah has learned from her daughter and how she encourages her daughter to follow her intuition, Deborah's ethos on did, how our physical symptoms start in the spiritual realm, and, most deeply, we cover our connection (and lack thereof) to mother Earth and the consequences it has on society as of late, and more.
